The Short Stories of Gabriel Garcia Marquez Short story writer. Novelist. Journalist. Political activist. Nobel Prize winner. Most beloved of 20th century Latin American authors, Gabriel Garcia Marquez was born on March 6, 1928, in the small coastal town of Aracataca, Colombia. He published his first story, The Third Resignation, in 1947 and began studying law and journalism. His first novel, Leafstorm, was published in 1955, the same year the Colombian government shut down his employer, the newspaper El Espectador. In 1958, after 14 years of engagement, he married Mercedes Burcha and began working for the Caracas newspaper, El Momento. In these stories, Garcia Marqu ez is attempting to capture the world as presented in Kafka’s Metamorphosis. He is striving to not only portray the world as it is, but to invent another dreamlike reality, and in the process demonstrate that the reality and the dream are one and the same. These bizarre and occasionally disturbing excursions into surreal states of consciousness are poignantly Kafkaesque. For example, the story The Third Resignation, contains a vivid reenactment of Gregor Samsa’s bug-like condition. In this story, instead of waking up as a dung beetle, the main character is trapped in a frightening existence of living death. He has been living in a coffin for 18 years, since he turned seven, when his mother was told by the doctor, Madam, your child has a grave illness: he is dead. Nevertheless...we shall do everything possible to keep him alive beyond death (5). Though he is dead, the main character continues to grow in size and also grows a beard, indicating that he is medically not dead, but, like Gregor Samsa, is completely paralyzed. Navratri Essay The Hindu Festival, Navratri, Nava meaning nine, and Ratri meaning nights, is typically observed in the fall between the months of September and October, although specific dates are determined in accordance to the lunar calendar and can vary each year. In some parts of India, a Navaratri festival is celebrated in the spring as well as the fall (Fuller) and is a nine night, ten day festival, in which the Mother Goddess and her various forms are celebrated each day (HEB). During these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of Shakti/Devi are worshipped, [and are said to] signify various traits that the goddess influences us with† (Navratri). A civil service or merit system takes the hiring, firing, and promotion power out of supervising officers and senior firefighters, and into the hands of a commission. Then after physical testing and training will be given and assessed depending on the job the applicant wants. My personal opinion is somewhat undecided because it doesnt affect me at the present time and I dont know what it is like personally to work under either system. However with my present knowledge of the proposition, I believe a merit or civil service system will not be as effective. Personal knowledge, experience, and relationships with a supervising officer and their subordinate are much closer than a commissions to the same worker. A commission cant be there to see attitude of the workers, small mistakes and willingness to work. One of the main reasons for this change is to eliminate prejudice and unfairness in the process, but on the other hand, a supervising officer knows the traits and the type of person a police or fireman needs to be. A commission is a group of people who are probably unrelated to that field entirely and in my opinion are unqualified to decide who should get hired, fired, or promoted. ...
